I picked up this large sideboard/buffet off kijiji. The gentleman I purchased it from was originally from Poland. While he showed me the buffet and a few other items, he spoke Polish while I answered back in English. I understand the language 100%, but unfortunately I don’t speak it… but it didn’t stop us from having a great conversation! Anyone else out there half bilingual? …lol…anyway, here’s the full sized sellers pic.
I love furniture that has this type of engraved or recessed detailing. If done right, engraved furniture designs can really accentuated a restyled piece.
You can opt to paint over these details with a light hand and dry brush so NO paint gets into the detailing, or what I think is a MUCH easier way is paint as you normally would – and don’t worrying if your paint gets into the grooves.
Once your piece is totally painted and dry, highlight the recessed designs using a dark wax or glaze. A white wax or glaze also looks amazing if your using a dark paint!
This sideboard has been painted in Bluestone House Chalky Patina Paint in “Bluestone”. I took these pictures this evening and had NO natural light (it’s 1:09am as I write this so you may notice some typo’s along with the inconsistent color!) so I didn’t get a consistent color for all these shots.
But believe me, it’s a gorgeous blue/grey and I added some warmth with yellow/gold undertones. It’s been waxed with 100% All Natural Bee’s Wax and all the recessed detailing has been highlighted with carbon wax.

I also like to distress those edges ever so slightly to highlight them.
I too love it when I come across someone of my own background. Even though I was born in Canada my first language before English was actually Croatian. As I get older the less I am confident in speaking that language. Good for you!!
