If you have a useless piece of furniture and have NO idea what to do with it, today I have a roundup of inspiration for you. I believe we all have gems in hiding and we don’t even know it!
Today I’ve curated some super talented creatives who have upcycled their unwanted furniture into something absolutely original and gorgeous.
I’ve already picked a few for my “MUST TRY” list!

Upcycle #1 – Dresser into Bathroom Vanity
I’m kicking off this roundup with this vintage dresser turned bathroom vanity from Kelly from Lily Pad Cottage. I love how Kelly left the original tilt mirror on. Super sweet!

If you have a dated coffee table you don’t know what to do with, Lauren from Blesser House shares how she created this tufted beauty!

This French Provincial has been turned into a gorgeous double vanity. I love everything about this!

Greenery anyone? I have a TON of drawers that I’ve been itching to upcycle and repurpose. Adding a stand and turning them into a planter is brilliant!
Upcycle #7 – Tallboy into Map Cabinet
Do you have a dated tallboy dresser? Katie at Little House of Four turned this tallboy dresser into a gorgeous map cabinet. I love the catalog card tags and hardware.
Upcycle #8 – Dated Desk into Night Tables

!Yum! These really are amazing redos! I have a whole barn full of candidates….better get busy before the weather gets too hot here in the South! I have my grandad’s old trunk that my Mom painted yellow and black (ugh). I would love to strip and see how the wood looks before I give up and paint it again. It still has the original paper lining still in good shape, its the outside that makes me cringe,
I’m green with envy…lol. A WHOLE barn full candidates sounds dreamy! Your Grandad’s old trunk sounds like such an inspiring project as well. I have a feeling there would be some stunning wood under the paint! 🙂
All great examples Denise, thanks for sharing them with us. My suggestion for such a “grand lady ” of a piece would be to paint the undercoat a silver or gold………..with a black overcoat…….Bold, yes, but an elegant piece like this demands the dramatic! It will be wonderful whatever you decide to make of it! Excited to see the finished piece!!

Hi Denise, I always enjoy your posts and watching your videos. Color suggestion for this new piece could be a beachy, light turquoise on the bottom and while on the table top. The design on the bottom makes me think of the beach and mermaids!

Oh I know Kathy! I’m going through Thrift Store withdrawal. I knew I loved dropping in and taking a peek but until now I didn’t realize how much!
Denise, I’m taking on my very first upcycled project and am going to try your slap on method for the spindles of a small table I picked up. My question is: do you sand the spindles? If so do you have any tips?

Hi Barbie! If you use Dixie Belle or any other chalk/mineral paint with good adhesion, you don’t need to sand unless it’s a super slick surface. That said, I do like to take a sponge sanding pad, wrap it around the spindle and give it a light sanding prior to painting (120-180 grit), and then again with a higher grit (220+ grit) paper to smooth out the paint. I demonstrate how here at approx 7:50. 🙂

Love your ideas Phyllis and I’m not sure about the wood. I was wondering the same. I think this piece is from the Bombay Co and looks really red even after it’s sanded. ??

Hi Denise. Loving this roundup. It always amazes me how an old discarded piece can be turned into a gem. I have a few pieces of furniture hidden in my basement that could use some reimagining:). Now would be the perfect time as I’m self-isolating at home along with the rest of the world, and I’m pretty sure I’ve organized just about every closet, drawer, and cupboard in the whole house. Lol
Can’t wait to see that neat little side table painted. Personally, I’d like to see it a dark traditional color. Maybe black?

I’m thinking DB’s colors of aubergine, plum crazy,, tea rose and colonel mustard. It would give me the courage to try something like that on my own. Hugs!
