LOOKING FOR AN EASY WAY TO PAINT LAMINATE? THIS PRIMER IS ONE OF THE BEST WAYS I KNOW HOW TO DO IT!
Happy Tuesday friends! I hope your week is off to a great start. I’m SO excited to share this Laminate Dresser Before & After with you! It’s also my birthday in 6 days – the BIG five-oh! To help me celebrate I have a surprise for YOU at the end of this post… a generous G*I*V*E*A*W*A*Y sponsored by Dixie Belle Paint Company!
But first, here’s the before and after of today’s makeover. This dresser’s been sitting in my inventory for 6+ years because painting laminate is not one of my favorite things to do. I’m always worried the paint won’t stick even if I do a ton of prep work.

What do you think of this Fern Woods ‘after’… isn’t she stunning!?!

STEPS
I started by giving this piece a really good cleaning and then priming with Slick Stick. For any shiny slick surfaces such as Formica, laminates, countertops, tiles or glass, this DB Primer saves me a ton of time prep work.
After mixing it well, I pour it onto a paper plate and use this high-density foam roller to apply the first coat. No sanding required… it just needs to be clean! I wait 2-3 hours and apply a second coat and let that dry overnight.
The next day, I do a scratch test with my nail to make sure it’s adhered 100%. Once it passes the scratch test, it’s ready for paint! If it doesn’t pass the scratch test, it requires more time to cure.
After this dresser was cleaned and primed, I sprayed two coats of cotton.
DB paint sprays beautifully but it does need thinning with about 10-15% water. I use my Husky + Compressor to spray however, I’ve heard this home sprayer is easy to use and cost-effective as well. If any of you have tried, I’d love to hear how you like it!
For the finishing touches, I added Fern Woods furniture transfer. Love this design because you can make it original to each piece by placing the design any which way you like!
These furniture transfers can be rubbed on and left as is, or what I like to do is give them a light sanding so some of the original paint finish shows through.
For the finishing touches on this dresser, I sprayed two coats of this clear finish in flat.
What do you think?
